CNN has obtained the messages exchanged between Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre – who wrote on behalf of himself and Finnish President Alexander Stubb – and U.S. President Donald Trump.

Communication:

Text message from Prime Minister Støre to President Trump [January 18, 15:48]:

“Dear Mr. President, dear Donald – regarding transatlantic contacts – for Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine – and your announcement about tariffs yesterday. You know our position on these matters. But we believe everyone should work to reduce tensions and de-escalate – so much is happening around us where we need to stand together. We propose a call with you later today – either both of us together or separately – please give us a signal on your preference! Best regards – Alex and Jonas”

Text message from President Trump to Prime Minister Støre [January 18, 16:15]:

“Dear Jonas: Considering that your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping 8 wars PLUS, I no longer feel obligated to think only about Peace, although it will always prevail, but now I can think about what is good and right for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have any ‘ownership rights’ anyway? There are no written documents, only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we have also had boats that landed there. I have done more for NATO than anyone else since its founding, and now NATO must do something for the United States.
The world is not safe if we do not have Full and Total Control over Greenland. Thank you!
President DJT”
