On January 20, 1921, Türkey was proclaimed an independent state on the territory that remained after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.
The 1921 Constitution (Kanunu) served as Türkiye’s fundamental law for a brief period from 1921 to 1924. Kanunu was a concise document consisting of only 23 short articles.
In October 1923, the constitution was amended to formally declare Türkiye a republic. In April of the following year, it was replaced by an entirely new document, the 1924 Constitution.
