The streets of Kosovo’s capital were transformed into a vibrant display of national heritage on Wednesday, as Arbëreshë from Italy joined local ensembles for a ceremonial parade marking the birthday of Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg.
The event, which took place in Prishtina’s central squares, brought together members of the Arbëresh community—descendants of Albanians who migrated to Italy in the 15th century—alongside participants from Shkodra (Albania) and the renowned “Rugova” folklore ensemble from Peja.
A Celebration of Continuity
Dressed in intricate traditional costumes, the participants marched through the city to celebrate the 621st anniversary of Skanderbeg’s birth. The parade served as a living bridge between the diaspora and the homeland, emphasizing the survival of Albanian culture and language across centuries of separation.
Promoting National Identity
According to Ekonomia Online, the activity was more than a commemorative march; it was a strategic promotion of:
- National Tradition: Showcasing the unique “Xhubleta” and traditional Rugova dress.
- Cultural Preservation: Highlighting the ancient songs and dances maintained by the Arbëreshë.
- National Identity: Strengthening the bonds between Albanians in Kosovo, Albania, and the historic diaspora in Italy.
Spectators lined the streets as the “Rugova” ensemble performed traditional dances characterized by their rhythmic strength and historical significance, while the Arbëreshë participants sang “Këngët e lirisë” (Songs of Freedom), which have been passed down through generations in the villages of Calabria and Sicily.
The festivities underscored the enduring legacy of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg as the unifying symbol of the Albanian nation, regardless of geography.
