President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said that enlargement is no longer just an option, but a geostrategic necessity for the European Union.
Amid tensions between Serbia and Montenegro, he emphasized regional cooperation as an important condition for EU enlargement.
After his meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Costa stated that investing in peace, stability, and security in Europe benefits both European citizens and Serbia.
“However, enlargement is based on building trust. The path is difficult, but the direction is clear. We must focus on three main priorities. First, fostering good neighbourly relations and regional cooperation. These are essential for security and economic prosperity. The Belgrade–Pristina dialogue and the implementation of the Ohrid Agreement are fundamental in this regard. The second is alignment with EU policies, especially foreign and security policy,” he said, as reported by Klankosova.
