The Central Election Commission (KQZ) of Kosovo has officially initiated the cross-border voting phase for the upcoming extraordinary parliamentary elections. Zarfes (envelopes) containing official ballots began reaching registered diaspora voters across Europe on Thursday morning, following their bulk dispatch from Prishtina on Wednesday.
Citizens living abroad have begun sharing operational confirmations of delivery, marking the activation of the critical expatriate voting bloc for the high-stakes June 7, 2026 ballot.
First Deliveries Documented in Malta
Among the first to verify receipt of their election materials were Kosovar students currently residing and studying in Malta. Pictures secured by Klan Kosova show that the official KQZ packets arrived via express transit on Thursday forenoon.
[DIASPORA VOTING TIMELINE & LOGISTICS]
• May 20 (Wednesday): Ballots packaged and dispatched by the KQZ in Prishtina.
• May 21 (Thursday): First wave of packets arrives to voters abroad (e.g., Malta).
• June 7 (Sunday): Election Day; hard deadline for ballot returns.
Return Protocols: Embassies vs. Direct Mail
To accommodate the vast geographical spread of the Kosovo diaspora, the KQZ has activated a dual-track return system to ensure all cast ballots are securely logged before the close of polls on June 7:
- Diplomatic Channels: In countries featuring established diplomatic presence, voters can directly return their completed ballot envelopes to the nearest designated Kosovo Embassy or Consulate.
- Postal Track: For citizens residing in sovereign states where Kosovo does not maintain active diplomatic representation, voters must independently mail their sealed ballots back via registered postal service to the central KQZ headquarters in Prishtina.
Election monitors emphasize that the diaspora vote remains a highly influential variable in determining the final seat configuration of the next assembly, as political factions rapidly mobilize ahead of next month’s decisive election.
