The European Commission has vowed to take immediate action against the U.S. following President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on European imports. Trump stated that his administration will impose a 25% tariff on EU goods, including automobiles and other products, sparking fresh tensions in transatlantic trade.

EU to Defend Its Businesses and Workers

Brussels has made it clear that it will not stand by as the U.S. imposes what it calls “unjustified trade barriers.”

“The EU will respond decisively and immediately against unjustified obstacles to free and fair trade, including tariffs that challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies,” said a spokesperson for the European Commission.

The Commission emphasized that the EU will always protect European businesses, workers, and consumers from unfair tariffs.

Trump Accuses EU of Exploiting the U.S.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting in the White House, Trump justified the tariffs by accusing the European Union of unfair trade practices.

“The European Union was created to cheat the United States, and I have to admit, they have been very successful at it,” said Trump.

He claimed that the EU benefits disproportionately from trade with the U.S., citing the trade surplus as evidence of Europe’s advantage.

“They don’t accept our cars, they don’t want our agricultural products. They always find an excuse while we take in all their goods without hesitation,” Trump added.

EU Warns of Retaliation

In response, the European Commission dismissed Trump’s accusations and highlighted the benefits of EU-U.S. trade relations.

“The European Union is the world’s largest free market and has been a benefit for the United States,” said the EU spokesperson.

They stressed that the EU’s integrated single market has facilitated trade, reduced costs for U.S. exporters, and harmonized standards across 27 countries.

“As a result, U.S. investments in Europe are highly profitable,” the spokesperson noted.

While reaffirming Europe’s commitment to dialogue and fair trade, the EU made it clear that it will not hesitate to protect its economy.

“We are open to partnership if the rules are followed. But we will defend our businesses and consumers at every step. They expect nothing less from us,” the EU spokesperson concluded.

With tensions rising, all eyes will be on Brussels’ next move as the trade dispute threatens to escalate further.
