The United Union of Education, Science and Culture of Kosovo (SBAShK) has reacted to the decision to postpone the start of the second school semester until January 12, a move the union has welcomed, while stressing that the measure alone is insufficient without concrete institutional action.

In its statement, SBAShK emphasized the urgent need for immediate and thorough inspections of all school facilities, particularly in areas affected by recent flooding. The union called for a realistic assessment of the condition of school buildings, the immediate repair of damages, and the elimination of any risks to students and teaching staff, alongside institutional transparency and accountability.

The union warned that delaying the semester start will have little effect if responsible authorities fail to ensure that schools are structurally safe and fully prepared for the return of students and teachers.

At the conclusion of its statement, SBAShK issued a strong union warning, making it clear that it will not allow the resumption of the teaching process without guaranteed safe working and learning conditions.

“SBAShK will not allow a return to the teaching process without guaranteed safe working and learning conditions. If responsible institutions fail to act in a timely and serious manner, SBAShK will undertake union actions to protect the lives, health, and dignity of its members. Safety is non-negotiable,” the statement reads.

The warning comes amid widespread flooding across Kosovo, raising concerns over the safety of public infrastructure, including educational institutions.
