The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, has said that his country does not vote for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe.

Szijjarto, who spoke before the start of the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the 46 member countries of the Council of Europe, which is conducting its work in Strasbourg, France, emphasized that the authorities of the Republic of Kosovo have also been notified of Budapest’s position.

“We have a very clear position, that we do not support Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe, and here we have a principled position about which we have informed our friends in Kosovo, as well. This principle position is like this; We would like to see the finalization of the talks between Pristina and Belgrade, and we believe, I am speaking from the experience of how many times Kosovo has applied for membership in an international organization, this has been a setback in the dialogue”, emphasized the Hungarian chief diplomat.

The successful conclusion of the Kosovo-Serbia talks, according to Szijjarto, is “the key to Kosovo’s entry into international organizations”.

“First, the dialogue must be successful, then Kosovo must apply for membership. This is our general position. Maybe this is not the attitude of the majority, in a fair way, we have shared our attitudes with the Kosovars as well”, added Szijjarto.
