German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced that Germany has reached an agreement with the United States to purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles and deploy them on German territory.

Merz confirmed the deal to lawmakers in the Bundestag, stating that the agreement was reached during meetings with U.S. officials on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara. He described the outcome of the talks as having “exceeded” his expectations, according to Reuters.

“With this, we are closing a critical strategic gap in our defense while at the same time working to develop our own European systems and deploy them across Europe,” Merz said.

The decision to station long-range U.S. missiles in Germany had previously been called into question after U.S. President Donald Trump announced in May plans to reduce the American military presence in the country.
