The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has said the country “is not for sale” following a meeting with a U.S. envoy in Nuuk.

Nielsen described the meeting with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as “constructive” and said discussions were held with mutual respect.

“We made it clear that the people of Greenland are not for sale and that they have the right to self-determination. This is not a matter for negotiation,” he told reporters.

However, the Prime Minister said he has not seen any change in the United States’ position toward the Arctic island.

Foreign Minister Mute Egede also said that the “red lines” of both sides remain unchanged.

Tensions between Greenland and the United States have increased following statements by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding taking control of the strategically important Arctic island.

Meanwhile, the United States and Greenlandic authorities have established a working group to discuss security issues and the U.S. military presence in the region.

The U.S. envoy Jeff Landry is in Nuuk to attend an economic forum and the opening of a new American consulate office on the island.
