The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, has called on Kosovo’s political parties to reach a compromise on the election of the country’s next president in order to avoid another cycle of elections and institutional instability.

During a meeting today with Acting President and Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu, Hargreaves discussed the ongoing political process and the current situation in Kosovo.

The British ambassador stressed the importance of the newly elected Assembly being able to elect a president following the elections, warning that failure to do so could trigger further institutional crises and lost opportunities for the country.

“I emphasized the need for political parties to compromise in order to avoid such a scenario,” Hargreaves stated.

He also raised concerns over hate speech and the abuse directed at women in politics on social media, describing it as a serious issue.

“We also discussed the appalling abuse directed at female politicians on social media and expressed hope that all party leaders would make clear that this is unacceptable,” Hargreaves said.
