Vetëvendosje leadership member Elvis Hoxha has sharply criticized French President Emmanuel Macron over his latest meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
Hoxha questioned why Macron continues to meet Vučić, despite Serbia’s ongoing glorification of its wartime past and the recent state-backed burial of former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić, who was convicted of genocide.
“President Macron is living through his final days in office,” Hoxha wrote, arguing that Macron’s repeated meetings with Vučić send a message about France’s own position.
According to Hoxha, France is effectively choosing to engage warmly with “Milošević’s propaganda minister” and with the leader of a country where a convicted genocide perpetrator was recently buried with military honors.
Hoxha was referring to Vučić’s role as Serbia’s information minister under Slobodan Milošević, as well as the official treatment given to Mladić after his death.
“Through this image, it should be understood that France is meeting with great affection with Milošević’s propaganda minister and the president of a country where Mladić, a criminal convicted of genocide, is buried with parades,” Hoxha said.
He ended his statement with a blunt criticism of France’s political and social response:
“It seems that French society no longer understands either humanism or history.”
Hoxha’s remarks come amid growing criticism in Kosovo over Western engagement with Belgrade and what many in Kosovo view as the continued failure to hold Serbia politically accountable for the glorification of convicted war criminals.
