Iran held the funeral ceremony on Thursday for its slain Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the holy city of Mashhad, bringing to a close a week of mourning ceremonies and large-scale funeral processions.

Khamenei’s body was transported to the Imam Reza Shrine, where the final burial ceremony took place. Thousands of mourners dressed in black attended the procession, waving Iranian flags, carrying images of the late leader, and displaying banners with revolutionary slogans.

Khamenei was killed on February 28, on the first day of the war, in an airstrike that Iran attributed to the United States and Israel. Following his death, Iranian authorities organized a series of ceremonies in various cities before the final burial in Mashhad.

Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and the United States remain high, as Iranian forces have carried out attacks against U.S. targets in the Gulf region, raising concerns over a further escalation of the conflict.
