The Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan, one of the busiest airports in the world with over 30 million visitors annually, is slowly sinking into the sea. Built on artificial islands, the airport has been sinking at a rate of 11.5 meters since its opening. Despite its design to withstand seismic activity, the weight of the airport’s infrastructure is causing it to settle into the seabed, with the sinking rate exceeding initial engineering predictions. This poses a significant threat to its future stability.
