The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (KAS) has reported a significant rise in electricity imports and a notable decline in coal production during August 2025.
According to KAS, the gross available electricity during August reached 502.12 GWh, while domestic consumption stood at 411.92 GWh, marking an increase of 1.29% compared to the same month last year.
The report also highlights that alternative energy sources accounted for 7.78% of total electricity consumption.
Electricity Imports Surge Nearly 70%
KAS data show that electricity imports in August 2025 increased by 69.95% compared to August 2024. Specifically, imports reached 360.62 GWh, up from 212.20 GWh the previous year — an increase of 148.43 GWh.
In contrast, electricity exports during the same period totaled 243.28 GWh, which also includes transmission volumes.
Coal Production Falls Almost 19%
Meanwhile, coal production by Kosovo’s energy sector, primarily from Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) power plants, dropped sharply.
KAS reported that coal output in August 2025 was approximately 495.66 thousand tons, representing a decline of 18.68% compared to the same month of the previous year.
The government has allocated over €6 million in subsidies to KOSTT, Kosovo’s electricity transmission operator, to help stabilize the country’s energy supply amid rising import dependence.
