Swedish prosecutors have officially charged a 34-year-old man with attempted espionage on behalf of Russia, the Nordic country’s state prosecution authority announced on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

According to an official statement, the accused is a former member of the Swedish Armed Forces, where his position granted him direct access to highly classified information.

The Investigation and Moscow Meeting

The prosecution alleges that the individual actively sought to compromise state security by attempting to hand over sensitive military intelligence directly to foreign operatives.

The suspect attempted to disclose [classified information] by traveling to Moscow in November 2025 and meeting there with representatives of the Russian intelligence and security services,” stated Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist in the official release.

The Russian Embassy in Stockholm did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the espionage charges.

Next Steps in Court

The judicial process is already underway as Swedish authorities finalize their case against the former military employee.

  • Detention: The 34-year-old suspect has been held in police custody since January following a counter-intelligence operation.
  • Trial Date: The defendant is scheduled to stand trial in Stockholm on June 15.
