John Healey has resigned as the United Kingdom’s Defence Secretary, citing deep concerns over what he described as inadequate funding for the country’s defence needs.
In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Healey highlighted the achievements of his tenure, including Britain’s leadership in supporting Ukraine during its war with Russia and strengthening the UK’s role within NATO.
However, Healey argued that the proposed funding package for the Defence Investment Plan falls far short of what is required given the current security environment.
“The financial settlement for the Defence Investment Plan is wholly inadequate for what defence and the country require at this dangerous time,” Healey wrote.
He stated that after making clear he could not support a plan that failed to provide the armed forces with the resources they need, resignation became his only option.
According to Healey, the growing range of security threats facing the United Kingdom requires significantly greater investment in defence capabilities. He warned that without additional funding, the government may be forced to make difficult decisions that could:
- Reduce the operational readiness of the armed forces.
- Increase risks for military personnel deployed on operations.
- Weaken the overall security of the United Kingdom.
The resignation represents a major challenge for the government of Keir Starmer, as debates continue across Europe about increasing defence spending in response to Russia’s war against Ukraine, growing geopolitical tensions, and evolving security threats.
If confirmed, Healey’s departure would mark one of the most significant cabinet resignations since Starmer’s government took office and could intensify pressure on the Treasury to allocate greater resources to defence.
