The United States administration is exerting significant pressure on Oman to abandon its traditional policy of neutrality and sever diplomatic ties with Iran. Washington has reportedly warned Muscat of potential sanctions if it fails to realign its foreign policy.

United States and Arab sources have revealed to The Wall Street Journal that Washington increasingly views Oman’s stance toward Tehran as incompatible with American strategic interests. US officials suspect that Muscat is maintaining an excessively close relationship with Iran during a period of heightened regional volatility.

Oman is currently attempting to strike a delicate balance between its long-standing security alliance with the US and its diplomatic ties with Iran, its neighbor across the highly strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to Arab officials, Muscat firmly believes that keeping open communication channels with Tehran is essential for long-term regional stability and conflict mediation.

Friction Over the Strait of Hormuz

A central point of contention between Washington and Muscat revolves around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime choke points for global oil and gas transit.

  • Sanction Threats: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has warned Oman with economic sanctions over concerns that the sultanate might implement transit tariffs or fees on vessels navigating the strait.
  • Omani Denial: Oman’s Ambassador to Washington, Talal Alrahbi, push backed against these concerns, explicitly stating that his country “has no plans to tariff the passage of ships.”

Maritime Assistance vs. Diplomatic Pressure

Oman has long positioned itself as a constructive maritime actor in the region, providing vital navigation assistance, search-and-rescue operations, and emergency medical support to international vessels—including those linked to the United States.

“Any threat to the freedom of navigation in these waters would damage the interests of the entire international community, including the United States,” stated Oman’s Minister of Information, Abdulla Al-Harrasi, reinforcing Muscat’s commitment to keeping the trade routes secure.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Omani officials have been caught off guard by the sudden hardening of the American stance. The sultanate’s leadership is currently evaluating diplomatic avenues to respond to the intensifying pressure from Washington without compromising its foundational foreign policy of neutrality.
