Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated on Saturday that his mandate will eventually come to an end and suggested that he may resign “soon,” while emphasizing that he would not shorten his term in the same way former President Boris Tadić once did.

“You either resign or remain president until the end of your mandate,” Vučić told reporters in Beijing at the start of his official visit to China.

“So, it is possible that I will resign soon,” he added.

Commenting on the opposition gathering held last night at Slavija Square in Belgrade, Vučić said such rallies could not destabilize him, particularly when they are “without well-thought-out content, empty, and not especially numerous.”

He also accused the organizers of being responsible for incidents that allegedly occurred after the protest ended.

According to Vučić, three separate security services estimated the turnout at the Slavija rally to be between 30,500 and 34,300 participants.

“We accepted the highest estimate,” he stated, while adding that more precise data showed there were slightly fewer than 34,000 people present.

Vučić further announced that the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) will organize its own rallies from June 26 to 28, stressing that “the messages sent to citizens are more important than the numbers themselves.”
