The White House has announced the nomination of Eric Wendt as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States to Albania.
If confirmed by the United States Senate, Wendt will succeed Yuri Kim, who left her post in 2023. A previous nomination, that of David J. Kostelancik, failed to pass due to political opposition in the Senate, where even a single senator can block confirmations.
Who is Eric Wendt?
Wendt has served as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Army since 1986 and has been part of the Special Forces (“Green Berets”) since 1991, building a strong profile in special operations.
Following the September 11 attacks, he participated in multiple key international missions. His experience includes deployments in Indonesia with U.S. Pacific Command, as well as operations such as “Enduring Freedom” in the Philippines and Afghanistan, and “Iraqi Freedom” in Iraq.
He has held several high-level leadership roles, including serving as a senior military aide to the U.S. Secretary of Defense, and has commanded at various levels within special operations forces—from small tactical units to large regional commands.
Wendt speaks Arabic and Korean and has received numerous international and military honors, including Germany’s Gold Cross of Honor for service in Afghanistan, as well as decorations from the Philippines and South Korea.
In November 2017, he was appointed U.S. Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority, playing a key role in regional security coordination.
