Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for the establishment of a “European Army” to defend the continent against Russia, suggesting that the United States may no longer come to Europe’s aid.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would “never accept backroom deals” made without its involvement, referring to discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin to begin peace talks.
In a speech on Friday, U.S. Vice President JD Vance warned that Europe must “step up significantly” in defense, echoing Zelensky’s sentiments on Europe’s growing need for self-reliance in security matters.
Zelensky declared, “I truly believe the time has come—the European Armed Forces must be created.” He added, “Yesterday, here in Munich, the U.S. Vice President made it clear that decades of old relations between Europe and America are ending.”
He urged Europe to adapt to these new dynamics, underscoring the continent’s need to rethink its defense strategies in the face of the ongoing threat from Russia.
