U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the historic importance of the transatlantic alliance, stating that the partnership between the United States and Europe has played a crucial role in protecting global stability and security.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Rubio acknowledged that the United States can sometimes be “direct” in its approach, but reassured European leaders that the administration of Donald Trump remains committed to maintaining strong ties with Europe.
Strong Commitment to Transatlantic Partnership
Rubio stressed that Washington prefers to work alongside European allies rather than act independently, underlining the value of cooperation.
“The United States and Europe belong to each other,” Rubio stated, highlighting the decades-long strategic alliance that has recently faced increasing political and diplomatic pressure.
He also noted that the U.S. seeks allies who take pride in their cultural identity and are ready to defend shared democratic values.
Call for Reform of Global Institutions
Rubio argued that international organizations must adapt to modern geopolitical challenges, saying that they should be restructured rather than dismantled.
He specifically pointed to the United Nations, stating that while it holds “extraordinary potential,” it has at times failed to effectively resolve major conflicts, including those in Gaza and Ukraine.
Rubio concluded that global stability cannot rely solely on diplomatic statements or legal frameworks, warning that actors who threaten international peace should not be allowed to exploit international law while violating it.
