Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Foreign Minister, Elmedin Konaković, has called on Western leaders to respond to the glorification of war criminal Ratko Mladić in Serbia.
The appeal comes after state and military honors were reportedly paid in Belgrade to the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
In a special address, Konaković appealed to the leaders of the European Union, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
He also called on member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, as well as all those who defend international law, peace, and European values, to respond.
“Act now. Before it is too late,” he urged.
Konaković has sent official letters to senior officials in Brussels and Washington, calling for a clear response to the actions of the Serbian authorities.
He has called on the European Union to consider imposing sanctions on officials and institutions that glorify war criminals and deny the genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Konaković warned that the glorification of Mladić is not merely a matter of dealing with the past, but a threat to trust, stability, and the European future of the entire region.
He had earlier also warned of the withdrawal of part of the staff of the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina from Belgrade, saying that relations with Serbia should be reduced to the lowest possible level.
