Following the historic victory of Hungary’s opposition, European Union leaders have issued their first reactions, with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stating that Hungary has chosen Europe.

In a public statement, von der Leyen said the outcome reflects a renewed commitment to the European path.

“Hungary has chosen Europe. Europe has always chosen Hungary. Together, we are stronger. A country is returning to its European path. The Union becomes stronger,” she said.

Her remarks come after opposition leader Péter Magyar secured a landmark election victory in Hungary, ending the 16-year rule of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Other European leaders have also begun reacting to the results, congratulating Magyar and describing the election outcome as a significant political turning point for both Hungary and the European Union.

The vote is widely seen as a major shift in Hungary’s political direction, with potential implications for its relationship with EU institutions and broader European policy.
