The Kremlin said on Monday it hopes to maintain “very pragmatic relations” with Hungary’s new political leadership following the electoral defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán by opposition leader Peter Magyar.

Orbán, a long-time nationalist leader and one of Moscow’s closest partners within the European Union, lost power after 16 years in office to Magyar and his center-right Tisza party in Sunday’s vote.

The outcome is seen as a setback for Russia, which had cultivated strong ties with Orbán’s government, as well as for allies aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite the political shift in Hungary, Kremlin officials signaled readiness to continue cooperation, emphasizing a pragmatic approach to future relations.
