Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has issued a defiant response to recent assassination threats from the organization “Severna Brigada” (Northern Brigade), characterizing the group as a remnant of criminal and terrorist influence that has been permanently rejected by the Republic of Kosovo.
The group, which was officially designated as a terrorist entity by the Kosovo government in June 2023, reportedly published a chilling message on social media stating: “As soon as the dawn rises over Kosovo, Albin Kurti will be dead.”
A “Terrorist Legacy”
Responding to questions from journalists, Kurti argued that these threats only serve to validate his government’s 2023 decision to blacklist the organization alongside “Civilna Zaštita” (Civil Defense).
“These threats are simply the newest evidence that they are exactly what we declared them to be: terrorists who have no place in the Republic of Kosovo,” Kurti stated. “Their time in our Republic has passed.”
The Belgrade Connection
The Prime Minister emphasized that while these groups no longer operate with impunity within Kosovo’s borders, they remain a regional threat due to their sanctuary in Serbia.
- Safe Havens: Kurti noted that many members of the “Northern Brigade” remain free and influential within political and criminal circles in Belgrade.
- Past Crimes: He described the members as “criminals who have tormented Kosovo in the past,” linking them to a legacy of intimidation and hybrid warfare aimed at destabilizing the north.
Context: Rising Tensions in 2026
The exchange comes during a period of heightened security concerns for Kosovo:
- Terrorist Designations: On June 29, 2023, the Kosovo government formally designated “Severna Brigada” as a terrorist organization, citing their role in attacks on KFOR, police, and journalists.
- Security Posture: The threat follows Kurti’s recent warnings at the London Defence Conference earlier this month, where he highlighted the “real risk of war” and Serbia’s “rapid armament” as indicators of planned escalation.
- Police Successes: Kurti took the opportunity to reaffirm that Kosovo’s institutions have dismantled over 111 criminal groups in recent years, significantly curbing the operational capacity of such paramilitary proxies.
Institutional Response
Kosovo’s security agencies are reportedly on high alert following the physical elimination threat. While “Severna Brigada” often uses social media and graffiti for psychological warfare, Pristina remains focused on the “Banjska-style” threat—paramilitary incursions supported by outside actors—that has defined the security landscape since 2023.
