In a major victory for civic activism, a massive commercial billboard bearing the ruling party’s slogan “Srbija pobeđuje” (Serbia Wins) was stripped down from the iconic Palata Albanija building in central Belgrade on Sunday evening following intense public outcry and direct citizen intervention.

The dynamic escalated quickly throughout the day when furious citizens, pushed by environmental alerts and political frustration, gathered at the historic site to demand the immediate removal of the propaganda banner, which had been put up by forces backed by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s administration.

Environmental Crisis Sparks Public Fury

While the political nature of the billboard on a historic landmark had already drawn criticism, the primary catalyst for the mass mobilization was a chilling ecological warning issued by the Bird Protection and Study Society of Serbia.

The organization revealed that the massive canvas completely covered and blocked the nesting sites of common swifts (Apus apus), a protected and rare bird species in the urban ecosystem. According to ornithologists, the banner trapped dozens of chicks inside the building’s crevices, leaving them to “starve to death” because their parents could no longer reach them with food.

Direct Action from Activists

The grim news went viral across social media platforms, drawing hundreds of Belgrade residents to the base of Palata Albanija.

Led by activists from the prominent civic movement “Kreni-Promeni” (Go-Change), some citizens took matters into their own hands. Equipped with basic tools, groups of protesters actively began tearing at the lower edges of the banner themselves, broadcasting the direct action live on various social networks to rally more support.

Faced with rapidly swelling crowds and a public relations disaster, President Aleksandar Vučić bowed to the intense public pressure late afternoon, announcing that the state would oversee the removal of the banner by 7:00 PM.

A Triumphant Removal

Exactly as promised under the watch of hundreds of cheering onlookers, professional alpine climbers were deployed to scale the landmark building and systematically dismantle the massive structure. The final drop of the canvas was met with loud applause, chants, and widespread celebration in the streets of Belgrade.

The incident is being hailed by regional commentators as a textbook example of successful grassroots mobilization in Serbia, proving that environmental causes combined with swift civic action can force the hand of even the most entrenched political administrations.
