Following the latest escalation triggered by Israeli strikes in Lebanon and continuing Iranian attacks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called an emergency meeting of the security cabinet scheduled for 11:00 a.m.

According to Israeli media reports, the closed-door meeting will be attended only by a small group of key ministers.

Iran and Israel appear to be moving once again toward a broader escalation in the Middle East, only days after an agreement to extend the ceasefire in Lebanon.

The meeting comes after Iran launched attacks against Israel. On Sunday, Iran fired missiles toward Israel in its first such barrage since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, complicating mediation efforts aimed at ending the conflict.

“A short while ago, sirens sounded in several areas across the country following the identification of missiles launched from Iran toward the State of Israel,” the Israeli military said in a statement on Sunday.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also announced on Monday that it had detected a new wave of missiles launched from Iran toward Israeli territory.

“Defense systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the IDF stated.

The latest exchange of attacks raises concerns that tensions between Iran and Israel could intensify further, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent a wider regional conflict.
