An Iranian official has issued the first response to remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly threatened that the strategically important Kharg Island could come under American control “in the not-too-distant future” and suggested the possibility of gaining “full control” over Tehran’s oil and gas industry.
The reaction came from Reza Moghadam, Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan, a country that has played a key role in facilitating negotiations between the parties.
Posting on social media just minutes after Trump’s comments, Moghadam sharply criticized Washington’s approach, describing it as a dangerous escalation rather than a genuine effort to achieve peace.
“America’s reckless adventurism and its boastful, conflict-driven approach have once again demonstrated that the United States is seeking escalation and political theatrics rather than a substantive and peaceful solution pursued in good faith,” Moghadam said.
The Iranian diplomat further suggested that previous confrontations had not produced favorable outcomes for Washington.
“If he wishes to test his luck, that is his choice. However, experience has shown that after cycles of tension and confrontation, he ultimately gains less than he had before,” Moghadam added.
The exchange highlights the growing tensions between Iran and the United States amid an increasingly volatile regional security environment. Kharg Island is of critical importance to Iran’s economy, serving as the country’s main oil export terminal and a vital component of its energy infrastructure.
The latest war of words is expected to further complicate diplomatic efforts and raise concerns about the potential for broader regional escalation.
