Ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara in July, voices from Europe are increasingly calling for greater unity within the alliance.

Norwegian Finance Minister and former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has urged alliance partners to show more solidarity ahead of the upcoming meeting.

According to him, Washington remains dependent on its European allies.

“It is in the national security interest of the United States to have a strong NATO,” Stoltenberg said in an interview with the newspaper Die Welt.

Regarding the upcoming NATO summit on July 7–8 in Ankara and repeated criticism from US President Donald Trump toward European partners, Stoltenberg told Die Welt: “Of course, there are serious differences of opinion between the US and Europe on trade, climate, and also security issues. I do not underestimate these challenges.”

However, he remains confident that NATO can continue to function as a strong transatlantic alliance.
