European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos announced that Montenegro has now closed more than half of its European Union accession negotiation chapters, marking another milestone in the country’s EU membership process.

In a post on X, Kos said that during Tuesday’s enlargement session, Montenegro successfully closed the chapters on Competition Policy and the Customs Union, bringing the total number of provisionally closed chapters to 18 out of 33.

According to Kos, the reforms implemented under these chapters will allow Montenegro to operate under the same rules as the rest of the European Union, reducing administrative burdens and border checks while creating greater opportunities for both Montenegrin and European businesses.

“Today was an important day for enlargement. Montenegro closed the chapters on Competition Policy and the Customs Union, bringing the total to 18 out of 33 negotiating chapters,” Kos wrote.

She added that the country should now accelerate its reform agenda.

“Now is the time to step up reforms and bring Montenegro across the finish line,” Kos stated.

Montenegro remains the most advanced Western Balkan candidate in the EU accession process, with Brussels repeatedly encouraging the country to maintain the pace of reforms needed for full membership.
