Speaking at a press conference, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that early parliamentary elections will be held in October or early November. He also confirmed that the presidential election will be held separately from the parliamentary vote.
“Last year, I told you that early parliamentary elections would be held before the end of this year, and I am keeping my promise to the Serbian people by giving citizens the opportunity to freely express their will. Therefore, before the end of the year, we will certainly have parliamentary elections, while the presidential election will take place somewhat later,” Vučić said.
Vučić’s announcement comes at a time when his government continues to face sustained public pressure. He had previously hinted that he could resign as president in order to run for prime minister, seeking to secure a new governing mandate for his political bloc.
The wave of protests in Serbia began after the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse, which claimed the lives of 16 people. The tragedy sparked widespread public outrage, with protesters accusing the government of corruption, negligence, and a lack of accountability.
Since then, students, civic movements, and opposition parties have organized continuous demonstrations demanding political accountability and the holding of early elections.
