The BBC has changed the headline of an article published on July 24 after an official reaction from the Embassy of Albania in the United Kingdom, which argued that the original wording unfairly generalized the actions of individuals to an entire nationality.
The article was initially titled “Albanians used false papers for settlement scheme,” attributing the actions of three individuals to Albanians as a whole.
Following the intervention of the Albanian Embassy in London, the BBC amended the headline to “Trio used false papers for settlement scheme,” removing the reference to nationality and focusing instead on the specific individuals involved in the case.
The embassy said it had informed the BBC that the original wording was “unfair, inaccurate and stigmatizing,” emphasizing that responsibility in criminal cases is individual and not collective.
“When a criminal matter involves specific individuals, responsibility is individual and not collective. Labeling an entire nation for the actions of a few people contributes to creating and reinforcing prejudices against thousands of Albanian citizens who live, work and contribute honestly in Britain,” the embassy said in a statement published on social media.
The Albanian Embassy in London added that it will continue to respond whenever Albanian citizens or Albania are treated in a way it considers unfair, discriminatory or based on stereotypes in the media.
“Respect for truth and the dignity of every community is not only a journalistic standard, but also a fundamental value of a democratic society,” the embassy said.
The embassy also thanked Albanians who have spoken out against what it described as unfair stereotypes and unsupported generalizations in media coverage, stressing the importance of accurate and responsible reporting.
