Albania’s parliamentary session began amid heightened tensions between the ruling majority and the opposition, with Democratic Party (PD) lawmakers blocking the podium as Speaker Niko Peleshi presented the agenda.

Opposition MPs held placards from student protests held over the past two weeks, expressing their objections to what they described as police violence against young people participating in the demonstrations.

PD lawmakers also repeatedly banged their hands on their desks in an attempt to disrupt proceedings and prevent the session from continuing.

The protest comes amid growing political tensions over the police response to demonstrations and the treatment of young protesters.
