U.S. President Donald Trump has ruled out running for a third presidential term in 2028, saying that although he would like to seek another term, the U.S. Constitution clearly prohibits it.
Speaking to reporters, Trump was asked about the possibility of seeking another term after his current presidency.
“Everyone keeps asking me whether I’ll run in 2028. I’d love to, but the law on this is very clear and strict,” Trump said.
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits a person to being elected president of the United States no more than twice.
Trump also addressed tensions with Iran and the broader situation in the Middle East, saying he does not trust Tehran and claiming that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz.
“We control the Strait of Hormuz, not them,” Trump said, adding that Iran should not become the “bully of the Middle East.”
The president also commented on his sudden departure from the NATO summit in Turkey, saying he faces a significant number of threats.
“I get a lot of threats. A lot of threats that you don’t know about,” Trump said. “Anyone who has an important position gets a lot of threats. People who aren’t important don’t get threatened. I think I’m the number one target.”
Trump said his security is ultimately handled by the U.S. Secret Service and that he follows agents’ instructions regarding security measures.
His comments come amid continued speculation about his political future, despite the constitutional restriction on serving more than two elected presidential terms.
