Vetëvendosje Movement leader Albin Kurti said he has contacted the leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) to seek an agreement on the election of deputy speakers of the Kosovo Assembly, arguing that such an agreement is necessary to avoid another parliamentary election.
Kurti said he had written to PDK leader Bedri Hamza and was already in contact with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, proposing that they meet and reach an agreement on the candidates for deputy speaker.
“First, Albulena Haxhiu was elected Speaker of the Assembly of the 11th Legislature, marking the beginning of the constitution of the Assembly. However, for the process to be fully completed, we must also elect the deputy speakers,” Kurti said.
He stressed that political agreement was necessary to complete the process and urged the parties to approach the issue constructively.
“We need agreement, and I am in contact with the LDK leader. I have also written to the PDK leader so that we can meet and reach an agreement on the election of the deputy speakers,” Kurti said.
Kurti linked the effort directly to the broader objective of avoiding new elections. He said that once the Assembly is fully constituted, the next steps should be the formation of a government and the election of a president.
“Let us be positive and constructive so that we can have a constituted Assembly, quickly form a government and move on to the election of the President, which must take place in order to avoid new elections,” he said.
The Vetëvendosje Movement earlier refused to vote for the deputy speaker candidates proposed by the PDK and LDK, contributing to the failure to complete the vote.
Kurti said he hoped to reach an agreement with Hamza and Abdixhiku as soon as possible.
“I hope to achieve this agreement as soon as possible with Bedri Hamza and Lumir Abdixhiku,” he said.
The dispute over the deputy speakers has become another obstacle in the constitution of Kosovo’s 11th Legislature, after Albulena Haxhiu was elected Assembly Speaker with 62 votes in favor, 16 against and 13 abstentions.
