The Kosovo Police has stepped up security preparations ahead of Wednesday, September 16, when the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague is expected to announce its verdict in the case against former senior Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders.
The police said it has taken the necessary measures to ensure public safety, maintain public order and facilitate activities planned in connection with the verdict.
As part of its preparations, Kosovo Police management held information and coordination meetings with relevant departments and regional directorates, as well as with international partners, including NATO’s KFOR mission, EULEX, representatives of the U.S. Embassy, the EU Office in Kosovo and the OSCE.
A coordination meeting was held at Kosovo Police headquarters, where officials presented the security plan and police deployments related to developments expected on September 16.
“Kosovo Police, in accordance with its official duties and applicable legislation, will provide security for all citizens without distinction,” the police said, adding that officers would be deployed to ensure that planned activities and potential gatherings proceed peacefully and without incidents.
Temporary traffic restrictions possible
Police warned that temporary traffic restrictions or road closures could be introduced depending on the scale and location of activities.
Traffic patrol units have been prepared to redirect vehicles to alternative routes if necessary, authorities said.
Kosovo Police called on citizens and participants in planned activities to follow officers’ instructions, exercise caution and contribute to a peaceful and safe environment.
The police emphasized that security planning for events involving large numbers of people is part of its standard operational procedures.
“Planning and taking security measures in cases where developments, activities or large participation of citizens are expected, as well as the drafting and implementation of police plans, are part of regular police procedures that serve the interests of general security,” the statement said.
The police said its officers would be present on the ground to maintain public order and security throughout the day.
The preparations come amid heightened attention in Kosovo ahead of the Hague verdict involving Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.
