The EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, warned that Russia’s war against Ukraine is an “existential threat” to Europe, as he urged China to support the peace process to end the conflict during a meeting with the minister of outside the country, Wang Yi.

China, a close ally of Moscow, has not publicly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Beijing has presented a 12-point document that sets out general principles for ending the war.

In comments made on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Laos, Borrell also urged Beijing to stop exporting dual-use goods to Russia that bolster its military capabilities.

According to a press release from the EU’s diplomatic service, Borrell explained why Russia’s war in Ukraine poses an existential threat to Europe.

“The High Representative/Vice President of the EU explained why the European Union considers Russia’s war against Ukraine to be an existential threat to Europe. He expressed his concern because China’s exports of large quantities of goods and dual-use items represent support for Russia to build up its military equipment.

It also said Borrell urged China to use its influence in Russia to help end the war. He asked China to support the peace process in Ukraine and considered that the joint declaration with Brazil of May 2024 does not go in that direction, writes The Guardian.
