Germany stated that it is not intimidated by Vladimir Putin’s threats to resume production of intermediate-range nuclear weapons if the U.S. confirms its intention to deploy missiles in Europe.
Washington and Germany announced earlier this month that the U.S. will begin deploying long-range missiles in Germany in 2026 as part of its commitment to NATO and European defense.
The U.S. is preparing “episodic deployments” for the long-term placement of such weapons, which will include SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles, as well as hypersonic weapons with greater ranges than current systems in Europe.
In a speech on Sunday, Putin warned the U.S. that such a move could trigger a “Cuban Missile Crisis.”
“We will not be intimidated by such statements,” said German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer at a government press conference on Monday when asked about the Russian president’s comments.
