Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vulin, attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Tuesday. Representing Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Vulin visited the “Serbian Corner” at Iran’s National Library and Archives in Tehran, opened in 2023 by Tamara Vučić, the President’s wife.
Vulin is under U.S. sanctions due to his ties with Russia. Serbia has strengthened cooperation with Iran since 2021, despite EU sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Belgrade also relies on Tehran’s support concerning Kosovo, which Iran does not recognize.
Masoud Pezeshkian, a moderate reformist and former surgeon, was sworn in after winning the early presidential election this month. The inauguration was attended by high-ranking officials from countries like Armenia, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and Brazil, as well as EU envoy Enrique Mora. Regional allies backed by Iran, including Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Palestinian Islamic Jihad chief Ziyad al-Nakhalah, were also present.
