The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, in his speech marking the official opening of the Polish Presidency, emphasized that ensuring the security of the European Union is a top priority.

Security and Unity in Europe

Costa highlighted the Polish Presidency’s motto: “Security, Europe!” and emphasized that the EU was born as a peace project after World War II. He stressed the need to reinforce security to ensure lasting peace in Europe.

“We must strengthen our security once again to ensure peace in Europe,” said Costa.

He also noted that the shared vision for Europe has been based on common values, principles, and strategic objectives: to strengthen the unity of member states, enhance the effectiveness of European institutions, and improve the prosperity of European citizens.

Poland’s Role in EU’s Success

Costa praised Poland’s journey to join the EU 20 years ago, calling it a “cornerstone of European defense with an innovative and flourishing economy.”

“Poland is undoubtedly one of the greatest success stories of enlargement, the best geostrategic investment Europe has made to ensure freedom and democracy after long periods of totalitarianism,” he said.

Costa expressed confidence that Poland’s Presidency of the EU Council would again demonstrate that patriotism and European integration are interconnected. He also emphasized the continuing role of member states in shaping the EU’s strategic agenda.

Poland as a Source of Stability

According to Costa, Poland serves as a source of resilience in times when authoritarianism and populism threaten core European values.

Ukraine Must Remain a Top Priority

Costa reaffirmed that Ukraine should remain the EU’s primary priority, stressing that the EU must continue its unwavering support for Ukraine.

“This year, we must continue to stand with Ukraine— as long as necessary, for as long as needed— to achieve a comprehensive, fair, and sustainable peace,” Costa stated.

He also emphasized the importance of international law prevailing for the freedom of the Ukrainian people and the security of Europe.

Strengthening EU’s Defense Capabilities

Costa highlighted the need to prioritize defense as a strategic focus for the EU, aiming to make it stronger, more efficient, resilient, and autonomous. He stressed the importance of increased investment and creative, pragmatic solutions.

“Always working for a strong transatlantic partnership and cooperation with NATO,” Costa concluded.
