Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called on Israel to stop its military offensive in Gaza, emphasizing that Palestinian civilians must no longer bear the brunt of the conflict.
“We have to tell the Israeli government ‘that’s enough,’” Tajani declared in a statement on Saturday, urging a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and peace for the innocent people suffering due to Hamas’s actions.
His statement comes after Israel’s military announced plans to expand operations in the Gaza Strip, while Palestinian health authorities reported that at least 146 people were killed in the past 24 hours during ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
Tajani’s remarks highlight the growing international concern over Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza, which began after Hamas militants launched a deadly cross-border assault on Israel on October 7, taking approximately 250 hostages.
The Israeli military campaign has devastated Gaza’s crowded enclave, displacing nearly all of its 2 million residents and resulting in over 53,000 deaths, according to Gaza health officials.
Tajani is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome later Saturday. While Italy has historically been a strong European supporter of Israel, concern is mounting over the severe humanitarian toll on Gaza’s population.
