Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned today that armed attacks on nuclear facilities should never occur and could result in severe radioactive releases.

Speaking at an urgent IAEA meeting, Grossi stated that the world is “in the midst of a serious conflict,” with Iran’s nuclear facilities having been targeted by strikes. Despite the gravity of the situation, he emphasized that a “path for diplomacy” still exists.

Grossi asserted that Iran, Israel, and the wider Middle East need peace. The crucial first step to achieving this, he said, is a return to the negotiating table and allowing IAEA inspectors to regain access to Iran’s nuclear sites.

Regarding the condition of Iran’s nuclear facilities following the American attacks, Grossi noted that craters are now visible at the Fordow location.
