Poland is closer to an open conflict than it has been since World War II, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday, following the downing of Russian drones over Polish territory.
He added that the country had requested NATO to open consultations under Article 4 of the treaty, which provides for consultations among members whenever the territory, independence, or security of any of them is threatened.
Tusk revealed that during the night there were 19 incursions into Polish airspace and that the army had successfully passed its first test.
“I have no reason to claim that we are on the brink of war, but a line has been crossed, and it is incomparably more dangerous than before. This situation brings us closer to open conflict than at any time since World War II,” he said.
Interior Ministry spokeswoman Karolina Gałecka announced that Poland had found seven drones and debris from a missile.
One drone hit a residential building in Węgryki, eastern Poland, without causing injuries, while in the eastern region of Lublin a damaged drone was found in the village of Czosnówka, police reported.
