Two people initially arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk have been released, with Utah authorities confirming they have “no current connection” to the deadly incident.
The Utah Department of Public Safety provided an update, stressing that the case remains an active homicide investigation. Officials revealed that the attack was targeted, with the shooter believed to have fired the fatal shots from the rooftop of a building overlooking the courtyard where Kirk was addressing a large crowd.
Around 3,000 people were present at the event, which took place in an open-air university courtyard. The university had assigned six security officers for Kirk’s speech.
The suspect remains at large, and the search is ongoing.
Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and a close ally of Donald Trump, was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon while speaking on campus in Utah.
His killing has shocked the nation, with political leaders from both parties expressing outrage. Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the shooting as a “political assassination,” though the motive remains unclear.
“This is a dark day for our state. It is a tragic day for our nation,” Cox said during a press conference, calling for an end to the political violence that has gripped the country in recent months.
