Parts of Australia are expected to face catastrophic fire conditions on Friday, as intense heatwaves sweep across most of the country.

Extreme heat warnings have been issued for all states and territories, except Queensland, with high temperatures expected to persist for several days, reports Telegrafi.

The state of Victoria has announced a total fire ban for Friday, as the fire risk is forecasted to reach “catastrophic” – the highest level. Approximately 450 schools and childcare centers will be closed.

A meteorologist told BBC that the combination of the heatwaves and the high fire risk in parts of the country could create the most “significant conditions” since the devastating Black Summer fires.
