The European Parliament will vote on Wednesday on a €90 billion loan to support Ukraine’s ongoing war effort, Parliament President Roberta Metsola confirmed. The vote, initially planned for later this month, was moved forward to expedite funding.

According to Parliament spokesperson Delphine Colard, “There is an agreement among the political groups” to fast-track the votes. The center-right European People’s Party (EPP), Socialists and Democrats (S&D), and liberal Renew Europe all support the measure. Their backing ensures a majority for the vote, which includes changes to the EU budget and amendments to an existing Ukraine funding mechanism.

Without this funding, Ukraine risked running out of cash by April, a scenario that could have severely impacted its defense capabilities amid ongoing U.S.-brokered peace talks.

The vote was previously scheduled for a special plenary session on February 24, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
