The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) announced on Saturday that Alice Weidel will be their candidate for chancellor in the upcoming snap elections on February 23.
According to the party’s leadership, the federal executive committee of the AfD and the chairpersons of the federal committees unanimously decided in Berlin to appoint the 45-year-old politician as their candidate for chancellor.
“Today is a great day for the party and a great day for Germany,” said Weidel at a press conference.
“According to numerous polls, we are currently second in strength, and from this, we want to gain a mandate to lead Germany,” Weidel added.
Just days before Weidel’s nomination, the AfD presented their election platform, which had a strong nationalist tone.
Among other things, the AfD calls for a departure from the EU and the Eurozone, advocates for strict anti-immigration policies, supports closer ties with Russia, seeks to restrict abortion rights, and aims to strengthen traditional family models.
