Belgrade, Serbia – October 2024 – The Belgrade Security Conference (BSC) kicked off on Monday with a striking visual of the recent Serbian attack in Banjskë, located in the northern part of Kosovo’s Zvečan region. The conference, organized by the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy, is centered around the theme “In Defense of Humanity.”

More than 70 prominent speakers are scheduled to participate across 15 panels, with over 50 delegates providing insights and analysis. The conference aims to offer a comprehensive view of the current and future challenges facing global security and diplomacy.

Controversial Imagery and Tensions

As the conference commenced, attendees were shown footage of violent protests by ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo, which occurred last year. This imagery underscored the ongoing tensions in the region and highlighted the fragile political situation surrounding the Kosovo-Serbia relationship.

On the first day of the event, Federica Mogherini, former High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, was among the panelists. Her insights into EU foreign policy and regional security issues are expected to be a key highlight of the conference.

This year’s conference will tackle some of the most pressing and complex geopolitical challenges facing the world today.

Key Themes and Topics for Discussion

The BSC 2024 will feature over 15 panels addressing critical questions, such as:

  • Could the 2024 Elections Reshape the World Order?

  • Achieving a Lasting Ceasefire in Gaza
What steps are necessary for achieving a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and how can the international community work toward long-term peace in the region?
  • The EU Enlargement by 2030: A Realistic Goal?
Can the European Union continue its enlargement process in the Balkans, and what would such a process mean for the future of the region?
