Iran has rejected recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, insisting that the United States cannot determine when there will be war or peace between the two countries.
Speaking at a press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said any decision on potential negotiations with Washington would be made solely on the basis of Iran’s national interests.
“We will not allow the United States to determine the timing of war and peace,” Baghaei said.
He added that Tehran would continue to defend itself “for as long as necessary,” arguing that recent U.S. military actions have undermined the conditions needed for meaningful diplomatic negotiations.
The remarks came after Trump claimed that Iran had sought talks with the United States, both through intermediaries and via direct channels. The U.S. president also warned that if no agreement is reached, Washington could launch another large-scale military operation.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, tensions over the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved. Iran maintains that it has authority over the strategically vital waterway, while the United States and its allies continue to reject that position, keeping one of the world’s most critical maritime routes at the center of regional tensions.
